You’re Doing it Right

June 19

The other day I passed by a colleague and friend of mine. I happened to be carrying my four-month-old baby boy (our sixth baby). He took one look at those bright little eyes and chubby rosy cheeks and called out to me as he passed by, “Great job, mama. You’re doing it right!”

I smiled and felt so grateful. Somehow his words touched something deep in my heart, something I needed to hear, amidst caring for my newborn, healing from childbirth, and trying to keep up with everyone else’s needs in our now family of eight.

But later, I thought to myself, “How could he know I’m ‘doing it right’?” He has no idea about my parenting decisions, whether I breastfeed or bottle feed or supplement or how long the baby sleeps at night (or doesn’t!), or how well I’ve managed to keep up with the rest of our crazy crew.

In fact, the only reason I ran into him was because I was returning an overdue library book and that seemed easier than cleaning my kitchen. How is that “doing it right?”

But then I realized something.

He wasn’t looking at everything I do or don’t do and making a judgment on it. He was simply acknowledging: You showed up. You gave of yourself and your heart as a mom, and what a beautiful little babe is now in the world, blessing us all. So yea . . . you’re doing it right. And so, dear mama, here’s what I want to share with your heart today . . .

You’re doing it right . . .

When parenting teens is tough and you’re worried about their future and whether you’re really getting through to them . . .

You’re doing it right . . .

When your heart breaks for your child diagnosed with a difficulty that will inevitably make life more challenging, and you’re not sure what’s the right strategy and yet you care so much . . .

You’re doing it right . . .

When you’ve been trying to teach the kids good habits, but it’s taking a long time and you wonder if they’ll ever really get it . . .

You’re doing it right . . .

When you yearn for more children and hold that space of desire in love, pouring out your heart to God the father of us all . . .

You’re doing it right . . .

When you’re surrounded by so many young children and desperately need a break, so you hide out in your closet eating some dark chocolate, do a few calming breaths like you did in labor just to regroup from the chaos, and wonder whether you’re really cut out for this crazy way of life . . .

Dear beautiful mama, You are for sure doing it right . . .

Because here’s what I know for sure. You showed up. You offered your body. You offered your heart.

And you get up the next day and do it again.

So even when things look messy, nothing quite seems to go “according to plan,” and somehow there’s both gray in your hair and dark circles under your eyes from sleep-deprivation, know this truth:

You have been courageous in ways that few have dared to go. You have blessed the world with these amazing little beings whose light and life to the world is only just beginning to unfold in all of its goodness and enduring radiance.

And you’re doing it right.
