Self-Care DIY Elderberry Syrup

Homemade elderberry syrup is a delicious way to ward off, or at least shorten, the duration of those sniffles and fevers this time of year. God tells us that he has placed, Along the banks of the river, fruit trees of every kind, their leaves shall not fade, nor their fruit fail. Every month they shall bear fresh fruit, for they shall be watered by the flow from the sanctuary. Their fruit shall serve for food, and their leaves for medicine (Ez 47:12 ). Although there is a place for conventional medicine, this elderberry syrup has been very effective both preventing sickness and helping my family’s bodies to heal quickly from any respiratory illness.  


  • 3 ½ cups water (distilled or reverse osmosis)
  • 2/3 cup freeze-dried elderberries
  • 2 tbsp fresh grated ginger
  • 1 tsp of cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 cup raw unfiltered honey
  • 2 drops of pure-grade lemon essential oil (optional)


Pour distilled or reverse osmosis water into a medium saucepan. Add ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and elderberries. Bring to a boil, and then cover and reduce to a simmer for about 1 hour—until the liquid has reduced by about half. Remove from the heat and let cool. Once it is cool enough to handle, you will mash the berries by using a spoon and pressing them against the side of the pot. Pour through a strainer into a glass mason jar. Discard the elderberries, and let the liquid cool to room temperature. Once it is cool, add honey and lemon essential oil, and stir until fully combined.
