My daughter came into my bedroom flustered, nervous, and excited. Tonight was her Junior/Senior Prom. This was her first formal dance with a date. She wanted me to help her finish getting ready. Was her makeup right? Could I help touch it up? To see her beautiful face, experience her excitement, and help her get all dressed up in a beautiful dress is something that I will cherish as long as I live. What made it extra special was that I was sick in bed for most of the day. She chose me. She wanted me at this moment, and it made my heart swell with joy.
To get to be here, give advice, and love her is something I could never take for granted. We are so blessed to be alive and here together. I try to drink up as much as I can. This is one of those times when it is easy to praise God.
I had to choose to praise God daily when I was pregnant with my first child and battling cancer. I was diagnosed with lymphoma when I was 20 weeks pregnant. I had to make many difficult decisions. My sister-in-law went to an oncologist in Baton Rouge who had successfully treated a pregnant woman with breast cancer. My parents lived in Baton Rouge and generously agreed to let me move in, and my own mom would take care of me. The biggest problem with deciding to move to Baton Rouge was finding a doctor who would deliver my baby. Not many doctors would want to take on a case with so many possible complications. It was disheartening to think that no one would help me. My mom’s friend, who worked for an OB that was retiring, approached him with my story. He shared my story with his wife, and she told him he must take care of me. He was a faithful man and was obviously sent by God to deliver my beautiful daughter into this world. I am forever grateful to him.
Looking back, I now see God’s hand in many parts of my journey. My cancer journey changed my perspective in life, and I will always be eternally grateful for it. I realize how blessed I am for every moment I get to experience, as they are not promised. I choose to praise God at all times because each day is a gift.
